Almost three years after the presentation of the first concept for the electric A6, there has now been the world premiere of the new A6 e-tron. The successor to the upper mid-size sedan released in 2018 now comes as a fully electric car without combustion engine options. Initially, there will be the Sportback sedan and the Avant station wagon. Both body variants are also available in the sportier S6 variant.

Audi A6 e-tron: Exterior design

For its upper mid-size sedan, Audi has focused on a modern vehicle that combines dynamics and elegance. When looking at the front, the narrow daytime running lights are striking, which, together with the grille and the wide black mask underneath, ensure that the A6 e-tron Sportback is close to the road.

This black mask also includes air intakes, headlights and other sensors and cameras, which are therefore less noticeable. The headlights are drawn three-dimensionally and offer digital light signatures. If we now move on to the profile view of the sedan, you can see a curved roofline, which stretches the car even further.

Another striking feature is the black insert in the threshold area. According to Audi, this is intended to highlight the battery of the A6 e-tron and make it recognizable as the centerpiece. Together with the lines, the insert definitely helps with the dynamic look. The virtual exterior mirrors, which are available for an extra charge, are also special on the A6 e-tron. In these models, a display on the inside of the door at the angle of the A-pillar replaces the analogue mirror. The display is fed by a camera that sits at the end of the flat straps.

The central design element at the rear is the solid light strip with the Audi logo centrally above. The three-dimensionality is intended to provide a modern look. while the diffuser is responsible for sportiness. The pronounced spoiler edge is also intended to underline the dynamics of the A6 e-tron Sportback. The rear lights also generate 450 segments via their 10 OLED panels and therefore generate images and can communicate with the environment. This is to warn of accident sites or breakdowns.

Audi A6 e-tron Avant on the road

With the Avant, Audi is pursuing the same design goals. Of course, the body here is not so flat and close to the road, but the rear of the station wagon also radiates dynamism in the Avant and lives up to the Ingolstadt-based company's claims.

The A6 e-tron has 19-inch tyres as standard, which can be enlarged to up to 21 inches on the S6. Customers can choose from eight different paint finishes: Magnetic Grey Uni, Glacier Weld Metallic, Typhoon Grey Metallic, Mythos Black Metallic, Plasma Blue Metallic, Malpeloblua Metallic, as well as Daytona Grey Pearl Effect and Siamese Beige Metallic, which are only available for the S model or the S line exterior package.

Audi A6 e-tron: Battery and range

The entry-level variant comes with an 83 kWh battery. This gives it a range of 627 km with charging capacities of up to 225 kW. Charging from 10 to 80% is possible in 21 minutes, and up to 260 km range is said to be charged in 10 minutes. As expected, the more expensive models in the new Audi A6 e-tron are equipped with a 100 kWh battery, which meets the range requirements of an upper mid-size sedan. Together with a fairly low drag coefficient of 0.21 and economical technology, the A6 e-tron has a range of over 750 km as a Sportback. Despite the station wagon shape, the Avant also has a drag coefficient of 0.24 and has a range of over 720 km.
